I have been trading crypto since 2018. Over that time I have created accounts on 12+ exchanges, helped friends and followers with registration — and every time saw the same mistakes. Mistake #1. Registering Without a Referral Link
Cost of mistake: losing a 10–20% fee discount permanently.
A referral link gives a free trading fee discount — and it is the only discount that cannot be added later. Registered without one? That is it — the discount can never be activated. On Bybit this is the difference between 0.1% and 0.08–0.09% on every trade. At $10,000/month volume — $10–20/month or $120–240/year in your pocket.

Mistake #2. SMS Instead of Google Authenticator for 2FA
Cost of mistake: potential loss of all funds.
SMS verification is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks: a scammer transfers your number to their SIM card and receives all your SMS codes. This is not theory — there are real cases in the crypto community with losses exceeding $10,000.
How to avoid: enable Google Authenticator (or Authy) immediately after registration. Save the seed key on paper offline. If SMS is already enabled — switch to Authenticator in security settings.
Mistake #3. Phishing Site Instead of the Real One
Cost of mistake: total loss of funds + data compromise.
Phishing exchange clones look identical — the URL differs by a single character. Google ads sometimes rank phishing above the real site.
How to avoid:
- Navigate only via bookmarks or verified links (ours: exchange catalogue).
- Check the URL before entering any data.
- Enable the anti-phishing code on your exchange — every genuine email will include your code word.
Mistake #4. Postponed KYC
Cost of mistake: $20–50 in expired bonuses + restricted functionality.
Typical scenario: registered, saw «complete KYC», thought «later». Returned a week later — starter bonus tasks already expired (7–14 day deadline). P2P unavailable, withdrawal impossible.

Mistake #5. Same Password Everywhere
Cost of mistake: account compromise from any data breach.
If your exchange password matches your email, Facebook or any other service — one breached service = a compromised exchange.
How to avoid: password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) + unique 12+ character password for each exchange. Never store passwords in a text file on your phone.
Mistake #6. Choosing the "Best Bonus" Exchange Instead of the Right One
Cost of mistake: inconvenience and overpaying long-term.
Beginners often pick an exchange by the size of the bonus headline rather than real needs. Then discover that: P2P does not support their currency, the interface is too complex, or the copy trading they wanted is absent.

Mistake #7. Buying with Card Instead of P2P
Cost of mistake: $15–35 overpayment per $1,000.
Card gateways charge 2–3.5% fee plus an inflated rate. P2P is 0%. On $500 the difference is $10–20, on $1,000 it is $15–35. Every month. Most beginners do not know about P2P and start with card — then continue out of habit.

Bonus Tips: What Experienced Traders Also Do
- Register on 2–3 exchanges at once. Bonuses stack, and diversifying across platforms is protection against one account being frozen.
- Save a screenshot of the Google Authenticator QR code on an encrypted USB drive — if your phone breaks, account recovery can take weeks.
- Enable email notifications for logins — you will know about every sign-in instantly.
- Keep your main balance on the exchange with the lowest fee for your trading type, and use secondary exchanges for specific tasks.
