How to Create a Crypto Exchange Account in 2026: Universal Beginner Guide

I have been trading crypto since 2018. I created my first account on Binance — without a referral link (lost a free fee discount permanently), without 2FA (then panicked when I saw an unfamiliar login in the logs), with a bad passport photo (KYC rejected twice). The first decision that determines everything else: fees, deposit convenience, security. My quick navigator:

Key rule: register through an affiliate/referral link. Without it you lose a fee discount permanently — impossible to add later.

The process is identical across all major exchanges:

1. Open the exchange website via the affiliate link (not via Google — ads often lead to phishing clones).
2. Click «Sign Up» → enter email or phone number.
3. Create a password: 12+ characters, upper/lowercase, numbers, special characters. Do not reuse this password anywhere else.
4. Email/SMS confirmation — code arrives within 1 minute.

Account created. But without the next step it is nearly useless — limits are minimal, P2P is unavailable.

KYC (Know Your Customer) is identity confirmation. Without it on most exchanges: no P2P, withdrawal limits $0–100/day, bonuses locked. With KYC — full access.

What you need

• Document: passport or national ID card
• Selfie or liveness check — camera confirms the document is yours

Tips to pass on the first try

• Photograph the document on a flat surface with good lighting — no glare or shadows
• Do not crop document edges — the entire card must be in frame
• Selfie — no glasses, no mask, direct gaze, neutral background
• If the system asks for video — turn your head left-right as prompted, slowly and calmly

Typical verification time: Bybit 5–10 min, Bitget 5–15 min, Binance 10 min — 24 hours.

Before funding your account — set up security. Five minutes that protect your money:

1. 2FA (Google Authenticator) — «Profile» → «Security» → «Google Authenticator». Download the app (not SMS — SMS can be intercepted). Save the 2FA seed key on paper offline — if you lose your phone, it is the only way to recover access.
2. Anti-phishing code — available on Bybit, OKX, Binance. You set a code word, and all genuine emails from the exchange include it. An email without the code = phishing.
3. Withdrawal address whitelist — enable if available (Bybit, Bitget). Restricts withdrawals to pre-saved addresses only.

Two routes — P2P is always cheaper:
