How We Rate Crypto Exchanges

Every exchange on BinExpart gets a score from 1 to 5, built from six weighted criteria. No single factor decides the outcome on its own.

Criteria and weights

  • Security and incident history, 25%. Has the exchange been hacked, what happened to user funds afterward, and how fast did withdrawals resume. Bybit's February 2025 hack (roughly $1.4-1.5 billion) left user balances untouched, and the exchange rebuilt its reserves within days. Bitget's September 2026 hack (around $388 million) followed the same pattern: the company said customer balances stayed accurate and unaffected, and restored withdrawals in stages by early October.
  • Fees, 20%. Base maker/taker rates on spot and futures, excluding token discounts, and how closely an exchange's real fee schedule matches what it advertises.
  • Access for traders in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, 20%. Whether the exchange works there in practice, whether it imposes its own bans (Bitget added Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan to its restricted list on October 16, 2026), and how quickly we catch changes like that.
  • Liquidity and products, 15%. Order book depth, number of trading pairs, and whether futures, copy trading, and P2P exist in the currencies you actually need.
  • KYC and onboarding, 10%. Whether verification is mandatory, how long it takes, and what limits apply before you complete it.
  • Support and usability, 10%. How fast support responds, and whether the interface and help materials exist in Russian and Ukrainian.

Data sources

Numbers come from exchanges' own fee pages and help centers, from public APIs where available, and from reputable outlets like CoinDesk, Cointelegraph, and The Block for hacks, sanctions, and regional restrictions. In our internal data file every figure is stored with its source and the date we last checked it; review pages show that date.

Update policy

We recheck fees and restriction lists on a regular basis. When something significant happens, a new country ban or a hack, we update the relevant pages within days rather than waiting for a scheduled review. The checked date sits next to the key figures wherever it matters for the reader.

What the score means

The 1-5 score is a weighted sum of the six criteria above, rounded to one decimal place. It's not a recommendation to open or avoid an account: it's a snapshot of public facts as of the checked date. A trader chasing the lowest fees and one trading from a restricted country will weigh the same facts differently, and their ideal pick can diverge from our overall number.

Limits of this methodology

BinExpart is not a financial advisor and doesn't give personal investment advice. We don't maintain live accounts on every exchange in every country, so double-check access and banking rules for your specific country on the exchange's own site before depositing. Scores can lag real-world changes by a few days until we verify them.

FAQ

How often do you revise scores?▼

There's no fixed schedule. Core facts like fees and country lists get rechecked regularly, and we reflect news about hacks or bans within days of confirming it.

Why do two exchanges with similar fees get different scores?▼

Fees are only 20% of the final score. The gap usually comes down to security history, access in your region, or product range, criteria that together carry more weight than fees alone.

Is this financial advice?▼

No. It's a comparison of public facts as of a given date, not a personal recommendation. Check current terms on the exchange's own site and assess the risk yourself before registering or depositing.
