USDT Networks: TRC20, TON, BEP20 and ERC20 — Which to Choose

Why the USDT Network Matters

USDT (Tether) exists across several blockchain networks at once — it is the same dollar stablecoin, but "travelling on different roads." The network choice affects two things: how much you pay for the transfer and whether the funds arrive at all. If you send USDT on a network the receiving wallet does not support, the funds can be lost forever. So this is not a minor detail — it is the first thing to check before every transfer.

Network Comparison

NetworkFeeSpeedWhen to choose
TRC20 (Tron)~1 USDT1-3 minMost popular for transfers, low fee
TON~0.1-0.5 USDTsecondsVery cheap, growing fast (Telegram wallets)
BEP20 (BNB Chain)~0.3-0.8 USDTsecondsCheap, if you work in the Binance/BNB ecosystem
ERC20 (Ethereum)$3-20+1-5 minOnly when the recipient accepts ERC20 only

Fees are approximate and vary with network load — especially ERC20, where peak-time fees can reach tens of dollars.

Which Network to Choose in Practice

  • For ordinary transfers between exchanges/wallets: TRC20 — the universal choice, supported almost everywhere, cheap.
  • If both sides support TON: the cheapest and fastest option.
  • Within the Binance/BNB ecosystem: BEP20.
  • Avoid ERC20 unless the recipient specifically requires it — the fee overpay is not justified for a simple USDT transfer.

Transfer Safety Rules

  1. Sender network = recipient network. Before sending, confirm the receiving wallet/exchange supports that exact network.
  2. Test transfer first. On a first transfer to a new address, send a small amount, confirm it arrived, then the rest.
  3. Verify the full address — malware swaps the clipboard address. Check the first and last characters.
  4. Do not confuse the network with the coin. USDT-TRC20 and USDT-ERC20 are the same USDT but different "rails." Addresses are not compatible across networks.

Where to Work With USDT Conveniently

Most major exchanges support all main USDT networks and let you pick the one you need when withdrawing. On Bybit, for example, TRC20, ERC20, BEP20 and others are available — the network is chosen in one click at withdrawal. How to sell USDT for local currency — in a separate guide.
